Very Disappointed

Tuesday I wore my new pants. They were comfortable all day. They looked good. They even looked good at the end of the day. UNTIL I TOOK THEM OFF. I did notice that there was a little pilling on the fabric after I washed it (It is 100% polyester - it should be washable) After reconfirming the fabric content on the fabric.com website, I did notice that it said "Dry Clean Only" Since I did notice the slight pilling after the prewash, I decided that I would dry clean the finished pants.

Well, when I took these pants off, I could not believe how terribly pilled they were!! This is the picture of the crotch area. I probably won't be able to wear these more than a few times before I will have to discard them. I'm glad I did not go ahead and make a jacket or skirt out of the rest of the fabric as planned, since I bought 4 or 5 yards of this. I have purchased from Fabric.com many times before and always been happy with the quality of the fabric. This time I am not.

Maybe this is a dumb question, but why would they pill so much right away? I want to know since I have some fabrics that are similar not yet used.

If you haven't already, contact Fabric.com. IMO, nothing should pill that bad after one wearing. Maybe they won't do anything, but maybe they will.

Oh, that's no good. Why do you think discard vs. defuzzing?

Nancy, that *REALLY* does stink. I agree with contacting fabric.com for a store credit. It won't replace your hours working on them, but it's something. And it certainly is in their best interest to keep a frequent flyer happy.

ANd like Renee said... do try getting a little 'fabric shaver' and cleaning up the pills. Seems to me like doing this over and over would start looking bad, but I'm sure it would work over several wearings.

I have contacted fabric.com and hopefully will hear from them soon. I will be "de-pilling" these, but I'm afraid that eventually there will be nothing left!

That's a shame! The pants are so lovely.

What a shame after all that work! I hope Fabric.com does the right thing AND pulls the fabric off the menu.

How sad, even if they come with a refund or new fabric (I hope they do) it's such a waste of all your effort and the wonderful fit you got with these pants.

Oh no! I hate when something like that happens. They look so good on you. I would try de-pilling so you can wear them a while longer.

How annoying to be let down by your fabric. The pants look so good on you.

Ewwww. I understand you pretreated them differently than recommended, but *wearing* them all day should not have had that effect. I do hope that Fabric.com is fair about that aspect, because those are some really nice pants.

Oh Nancy, I'm so far behind in blog reading, but wanted to send my sympathies about your pants, that is just rotten! On a brighter note, I've scrolled back through a bunch of your posts and see so many gorgeous garments. That Sandra B jacket is so awesome!!!!

You can probably defuzz for awhile but after awhile that doesn't really work. That is truly ashame that this occured. I hope that Fabric.com makes it up to you. I have purchased quite a bit of fabric from them and the quality was good.

Nancy - I have a different take on this. I use a lot of smooth wools for pants because I have found that anything with a tendency to pill only gets worse with time because my legs rub together and cause wear. I've even noticed it with skirts sometimes, a nubbier fabric will pill where I'm rubbing/sliding across a seat.

I'm sure that fabric.com will do something for you but realizing the properties of a fabric before assigning it to a usuage will probably be helpful for the future. This is tricky because you only know what's wrong after the garment is made up...however, I try not to forget these little lessons for the future.

I'm sorry that the fabric has disappointed after all the hard work you put into the pants!
